Joey Barton on his first night in prison

Joey Barton Football365

On Tuesday we brought you a video exclusive of Joey Barton explaining his reasons behind writing his autobiography ‘No Nonsense’ and now we being you the second of four videos, in which Joey talks to author Michael Calvin about his first night in prison.

In a sit-down conversation __with Calvin, Barton explains how he felt when he arrived in prison, having been sentenced to six months in jail for assaulting a teenager in Liverpool.

“You are dehumanised in all manner of different ways and your primeval urge is to survive,” he says.

“You obviously don’t want to get involved in further violence, because that negates the reason for being in there. All of a sudden there is a different set of rules and laws. It’s a lot more similar to the darker parts of where you grew up.”

For more on Barton’s time in prison, read his compelling autobiography, in which he writes:

‘I never thought I would end up in prison, even at the peak of my misdemeanours.

‘I thought, ‘I’m not a criminal. All I’ve been doing is going out drinking, having a scrap. It’s what lads do.’

‘There was shock at first – ‘Oh s***, you are going in there.’ But I am also capable of being very analytical and I prepared myself for prison. I used my time positively.’
