Ryan Giggs has defended Jose Mourinho’s defensive approach in big games for Manchester United.
Mourinho’s United had just one shot on target against Liverpool on Monday, but secured a 0-0 draw at Anfield through some stoic defending.
Liverpool were restricted to few chances, and could not play their usual attacking game at home. You should read 16 Conclusions on the game then tell all your friends.
Former United assistant manager Giggs says that such an approach is “something we accept at the minute”.
“It’s the climate we’re in,” he told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “You see the games coming up – if you lose tonight the pressure is on.
“Going up against Liverpool – everyone expected Liverpool to blow United away.
“It all comes down to results. United had 35 per cent possession tonight. Last season Louis van Gaal was getting stick because we were having 65 per cent, but we got a win.
“It’s a good draw but you have to beat Fenerbahce on Thursday then the momentum builds and you go into Chelsea and Manchester City full of confidence.
“It’s baby steps. It’s about getting to the top but it all comes down to results.
“If you have 35 per cent possession and win everyone is happy. If you have a consecutive run of draws or you are not winning then supporters aren’t happy.”
